Shoulder Internal Rotation Mobility

This Shoulder Internal Rotation Mobility exercise aims to increase the mobility of your shoulder, specifically taking the arm upwards behind your back. Improving this mobility will make activities such as getting dressed or reaching behind you easier.

In standing whilst holding a towel or a broom stick behind your back, with the arm you are working on at the bottom of the towel or broom stick, try and move your lower arm up your back as far as possible. Make sure your torso remains upright and doesn't rotate with the movement. You can use your other hand to apply a gentle pull to make sure you are getting to the full end of range. You should feel the shoulder muscles being stretched during this movement but it shouldn't produce any sharp pain.

To make this exercise easier you can perform this without the towel or pole, or simply reduce the distance you are moving up your back.

Aim to complete the reps and sets as suggested in your rehab programme.
