Resisted Thumb Extension
The Resisted Thumb Extension Strengthening exercise aims to increase the strength of the muscles and tendons around your thumb. This is particularly helpful if you are suffering from De Quervain’s syndrome, however there are many other scenarios it can be used.
Using a resistance band which is wrapped around your thumb and hand, aim to move your thumb upwards as if you were trying to do a ‘thumbs up’ movement. You should feel the tendons and muscles on the top of your thumb having to work to produce the movement.
Aim to complete the duration and sets as suggested in your free rehabilitation programme from our website.
If this exercise is too difficult you could remove the resistance band and simply place your other hand in the way, aiming to perform the action of ‘thumbs up’ but without generating any movement. The muscles and tendons will still be working but with less intensity.
If this exercise is too easy, you can perform more repetitions, or select a resistance band with a greater resistance.
